Battery Maintenance: Tips to Extend the Life of Your Batteries

When an unexpected power outage strikes, a UPS battery can be a true saviour. It offers a vital window of opportunity to save important files, safely power down electronics, and protect devices from potential damage. In addition, power surges caused by lightning strikes can wreak immediate havoc by burning circuits and causing material meltdowns. These sudden voltage spikes are more common than you might think and can originate from within your own home. UPS batteries have versatile applications, serving as a reliable source of electricity for computer servers, household appliances, and electronic gadgets. Here are some tips to help prolong the life of your UPS battery:

Place the UPS unit in a cool place

The location where you install your UPS unit plays a significant role in the battery’s lifespan. Surprisingly, the placement of your UPS unit can greatly impact its performance. For optimal operation, it is crucial to position your UPS unit in a cool and dry area.

Provide at least a 2-inch space around the system to allow for proper airflow. Maintaining a temperature around 77°F (25°C) is important, as every 8-degree Celsius increase can halve the battery’s lifespan. Also, avoid exposing your UPS system to high-moisture environments and keep it away from open windows.

Ensure that your UPS is appropriately sized for your power requirements. An oversized UPS can result in underutilization and reduced battery life. Consult the manufacturer’s guidelines or seek professional advice to determine the ideal UPS capacity for your specific needs.

Regular Battery Testing

Perform regular battery testing to assess their capacity and health. This can be done through load testing or utilising specialised battery testing equipment. Replace any batteries that fail to meet performance standards or exhibit significant deterioration.

Store Replacement Batteries Properly

If you have spare batteries for replacement, it is essential to store them correctly. New batteries can be stored for up to 12 months. However, avoid storing spare batteries for extended periods, as the permanent capacity loss may occur within 18-30 months. Batteries will last longer if they are stored in a cool place. The ideal temperature is 50°F (10°C) or lower.

Regular Calibration

To maximise battery life, regularly calibrate the charging system. This ensures accurate charging and prevents overcharging or undercharging of the batteries. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for calibration procedures and recommended intervals.

Perform Regular Maintenance

Prevent damage by ensuring fully discharged batteries are recharged within 48 hours. Monitor the discharge status of your batteries, as over-discharging and excessive charging (such as weekly battery cycling) can lead to charging problems and shorter battery life. As batteries age, their internal resistance gradually increases due to corrosion and normal wear. Replace the battery if the internal resistance reaches a 30% increase. You can measure internal resistance through capacity testing, and a drop of 80% from the original capacity indicates a “cooked” battery.

Scheduled Inspections

Regularly inspect the central battery system to identify any signs of wear, damage, or malfunction. This includes checking battery cells, wiring connections, charging systems, and monitoring indicators or alarms associated with the system. If any issues are detected during inspections, it is advisable to opt for professional central battery maintenance services.
